Best pizzas in Mumbai, as picked by the city’s top foodies

Looking for the best pizza in Mumbai? We’ve got you covered. If there is one food that is universally loved, it’s got to be pizza. This doughy comfort dish is counted among some of the most popular foods, no matter what part of the world you’re in. It has its own iterations as well. Whether it’s flatbreads in the Middle East, khachapuri in Georgia, or pides and lahmacun in Turkey, the world’s obsession with pizza is big, and rightly so. Back home, you even have Indianised versions of pizza, with a whole range of spicy flavours and toppings. Not to mention, the growing number of pizza delivery kitchens in cities like Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru is another testament to the fact that Indians love their pizza.

We spoke to different tastemakers and foodies across the city for their take on the best pizza in the city.

Best pizza in Mumbai

Ciro’s Pizzeria

“A Chennai-based brand called Ciro’s Pizzeria (Kitchen Plus, C Wing 111,112, Kailash Vaibhav Industrial Complex, Vikhroli West. Call: 07305731777) recently opened up in Bombay and they do great parma ham and rocket leaf pizzas. They have quite a few combinations in traditional as well as sourdough pizzas. Since I was a kid, we would always go to Pizza by the Bay (Soona Mahal, 143, Marine Dr, Churchgate. Call: 02222843646) as a family, so I would still go back there for the nostalgia of the experience. And you can’t go wrong there; there are no surprises and just simple decent pizzas. Apart from these, the mushroom truffle pizza (funghi e tartufo) at CinCin (Ground Floor, Raheja Towers, near Yauatcha Restaurant, Bandra Kurla Complex, Bandra, East. Call: 8355870000) is also really nice. And on a daily basis I will have something like the calabrese pizza from Pizza Express (website) or something from Slyce Pizza (Instagram). These outlets are great for a simple pizza on any given day, when you don’t necessarily want to go fancy.” Nikki Gupta, brand consultant at We Do (Things)

Gustoso, Khar West and Kemps Corner

“I’ve probably tried all the pizzas there are in the city, but it’s only Gustoso (multiple outposts) that I keep going back to. They do a really mean parma ham, parmesan and rocket leaf pizza, and nobody does it as well as them. Cecconi’s (Soho House Mumbai, 16, Juhu Tara Rd, Chandrabai Nagar, Juhu. Call: 02262133333) and CinCin also do nice pizzas, and I’m also impressed by Hundo Pizza (multiple outposts). They do a really good chicken ghee roast pizza. It was a surprising dish to see on a pizza menu at first, but turned out to be really good.” Anuradha Joshi Medhora, owner, Charoli Foods

“This is a very tough question to answer but my go-to pizza is the Diavola from Gustoso. It’s got the perfect crust, the base is not too thin and the combination of the spicy salami, jalapenos and mozzarella just works for me. I’m also a fan of the classic margherita from Ray’s Pizza and the funghi pizza from Hundo Pizza.” Pooja Dhingra, pastry chef and founder, Le15 Patisserie

“I recently discovered Gustoso’s pizzas and they are really quite nice. Simple but well done, some of my favourites are the margherita, four cheese, and spicy chicken–interestingly they use minced chicken for this one. I like the fact that they use an actual woodfire oven and not one burned by gas. It helps bring out the flavours really well. Apart from that, I enjoy the pizzas at Pizza Express (multiple outposts), and they have some really good options for vegetarians too.” Sanjyot Keer, chef, digital content creator and founder, Your Food Lab

Americano, Fort

“One of my favourites would have to be Americano (Radha Bhavan, Nagindas Master Road, Kala Ghoda, FortCall 9321104682). The quality of the base is really great and I know for a fact that they put in a lot of effort into making their dough. If I had to suggest ordering any, I would say the margherita and kejriwal pizza are top picks. Cin Cin also makes some really nice pizzas that are hand-tossed, with a simple, no-fuss tomato sauce and locally-sourced ingredients.” Chef Gresham Fernandes, culinary director, Impresario Handmade Restaurants

“I’d have to say Americano for some of the best pizzas in the city. The hydration of the dough is just perfect and it’s slowly fermented for over 24 hours. The crust, coupled with the sauce and cheese does it for me. Definitely get the Americano pizza with spicy salami, tomato and fior di latte. Also, Pizza Express is great, offering consistent taste and quality. I like the pollo coriander pesto pizza which is an Indian twist to the Italian pesto sauce.” Vicky Ratnani, chef and culinary consultant

“Chef Alex Sanchez has really nailed it with the pizzas on offer at Americano. My favourite is the Rosso, with tomato, oregano, garlic and olive oil. The dough is great, and the pizza itself is crispy and light. I’d also recommend the pizzas at Gustoso for artisanal-style fare, especially the parma ham pizza. Also, Hundo Pizza and Queen Margherita Pizzeria do a pretty good job.” Vidit Aren, executive chef, Soufflé S’il Vous Plaît

Queen Margherita’s Pizzeria, Malad

“I really like Queen Margherita’s Pizzeria (Shop no. B-12, Kamla Nagar, Chincholi Bunder Road, Malad West. Call 9930917249) for the simple fact that the pizzas are well-made and they always get it just right. My personal picks are the fresh burrata or margherita pizza, and they even do one with truffle burrata that’s pretty good.” Bhakti Mehta, chef and founder, Little Food Co.
